AG Nandlall’s slip is showing, it’s not an attractive colour

Dear Editor,

Reference is made to “Nandlall `vehemently’ rejects autocracy suggestion” (Sep 12). I ask the AG, my good friend, whether the following are shades of autocracy:

1. The rigging of a party’s internal election (Wasn’t Nandlall a victim?)
2. Last minute withdrawal of the swearing in of one Mr. Nandlall on August 2, 2020 as Vice President (in addition to being AG)
3. Alleged non-publication of the views of the opposition and civic society in state media and the PPP allied Guyana Times and other media houses like Queens Atlantic owned TV and radio
4. Silencing of critics or driving fear into them for daring to criticize government.
5. Threatening people with their jobs unless they comply with directives (many of which are at a minimum unethical if not also illegal).
6. Fear among civil servants in critiquing policies.
7. Lack of investigations into allegations of corruption.
8. Disappearance of one Mr. Su to give testimony on allegations of corruption.
9. Payment of letter writers and commentators to attack political opponents and critics including Dr. Ramcharran (Isn’t one of them paid one million dollars monthly for a daily outpouring of trash in the state media and another $3 million monthly for a weekly online cuss out in which no respect is shown to females who are abused with all kinds of name calling?)
10. Lack of democracy in a party and the government – isn’t the PPP a two-man pappy show?

AG, your slip is showing, and it is not an attractive colour. You are compromising your intellectual integrity to defend the indefensible. You don’t need to take one for the team. People have respect for you. You don’t need to stoop so low to bow to your boss. AG Don’t be a “dhobi”.
