By Mark DaCosta- In recent weeks, Lenora Stadium, including our flagship National Stadium, hosted several prestigious events including the senior championship, the Aliann Pompey Invitational, the National Youth and Junior championships, and T20 cricket. These tournaments have been a source of inspiration for athletes and spectators alike, offering valuable competitive opportunities. However, beneath the surface of these high-profile competitions lies a harsh reality that plagues nearly every sports facility across our nation.
Despite government claims of prioritising sports development and allocating a substantial 4.6 billion dollars towards it, the conditions at many sporting venues remain deplorable. VIP areas often take precedence, leaving athletes and regular spectators with substandard facilities — malfunctioning toilets, inadequate seating, and a general lack of basic amenities. This disparity raises serious questions about the sincerity of the PPP regime’s commitment to sports.
Shadow Minister for Sports, Nima Flue-Bess told Village Voice News the government has been running advertisements daily about how much is being done for sports, “however when you visit the Leonora facility the impression one would get is that the VIPs are the most important and not the athletes and ordinary spectators.” She said the same holds true for the National Stadium where the VIP section is seen as the most important.
According to the shadow minister, “while the hosting of these track and field meets were very inspiring and provided opportunities for our athletes to get the much needed exposure in competitions there is a lot more left to be desired.
Sports play a crucial role in individual, community, and national development. Personally, participation in sports promotes physical fitness, mental resilience, and character-building traits like discipline and teamwork. At a community level, sports foster social cohesion, bridging gaps and uniting diverse groups under a common passion. Nationally, successful sports programmes enhance national pride, stimulate tourism, and contribute significantly to economic growth.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), “Sports and physical activity are crucial for promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing chronic diseases.” This underscores the importance of investing in adequate sporting infrastructure that encourages participation and excellence.
The sorry state of our sporting facilities not only undermines our athletes’ potential but also tarnishes our international reputation. When international athletes visit for competitions, they are confronted with facilities that fail to reflect our nation’s capabilities and aspirations. This disparity between rhetoric and reality raises doubts about our government’s true commitment to sports development.
To truly elevate our sporting prowess on the global stage, the PPP regime must go beyond token gestures. They must prioritise the refurbishment and maintenance of existing facilities, ensuring they are safe, hygienic, and fully equipped to host local and international events. This investment is not just about upgrading physical structures; it is about investing in our athletes’ future and fostering a culture of sporting excellence nationwide.
While recent tournaments at Lenora Stadium have showcased glimpses of our athletes’ potential, they have also highlighted the urgent need for substantial improvements in our sporting infrastructure. The PPP government must demonstrate genuine commitment by translating promises into actions that benefit all stakeholders — athletes, communities, and the nation at large. Our athletes deserve world-class facilities to thrive, and our nation’s pride depends on it.
