The Church’s Silence in the Face of Injustice Is a Betrayal of Its Moral Responsibility

Dear Editor,

Those who once lectured Guyanese on morality, corruption and sin have become conspicuously silent in the face of alleged police brutality, political persecution and other atrocities in Guyana. The Church, which once stood as a guardian of righteousness, justice and peace, appears to have compromised its moral authority in exchange for money and political favour.

When Church leaders submit themselves to the PPP/C government for funding of their annual youth programmes, they undermine the very principles they are supposed to uphold. Such conduct is a betrayal of their spiritual responsibility. Their silence in the face of injustice raises serious questions about whether financial benefits have taken precedence over their duty to speak truth to power.

Worse still, AG-1 bishops have opened their churches to host the PPP, while reportedly benefiting from duty-free concessions and other gifts. These leaders have reduced what was once a respected religious institution to an assembly of weak and disingenuous individuals, more concerned with personal benefits than defending the principles of faith and justice.

The Men’s Ministry has also become the preserve of a special clique allegedly organised along PPP political lines. Through racism, selective associations and exclusionary practices, they are effectively destroying this department. We, the members of the Men’s Ministry, know who these individuals are.

Who could have imagined that this would be the state of affairs 30 years ago? The leadership now behaves much like those they serve, with money and personal advancement seemingly taking priority over spiritual development and the interests of the membership. There is little inspiration, no meaningful direction and very little being done for ordinary members.

It is particularly troubling that an estimated 75 per cent of the organisation’s funding is consumed by travel and allowances, while the membership receives little in return. The PPP/C has stained the reputation of what was once a dynamic and influential religious assembly, and its leaders remain silent.

Redemption will come from other sources. We will continue to look beyond these failed dinosaurs whose leadership has lost its purpose and moral credibility. Our hope and deliverance are not in compromised institutions or self-serving leaders, but through Jesus Christ.

Yours truly,
Gavin Marks
