Hana Mohamed, Office Manager in the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, was reportedly taken to hospital after sustaining injuries following her re-arrest by the Guyana Police Force on Thursday.
The circumstances surrounding her injuries, including how they were sustained and the nature of her condition, remain unclear. This publication is seeking further information.
Hana, the sister of Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, was initially arrested on Wednesday in connection with a complaint alleging damage to a vehicle belonging to Senior Superintendent of Police Prem Narine, head of the Guyana Police Force’s Special Branch. She was subsequently released on bail.
However, she was reportedly arrested again on Thursday, with news of her hospitalisation emerging amid mounting controversy surrounding the treatment of members of the Opposition Leader’s family.
Her re-arrest comes as Azruddin Mohamed remains in police custody following his arrest on Wednesday in connection with an investigation into the alleged payment of GY$800,000 for surveillance footage relating to an October 12 confrontation involving Narine.
The Opposition Leader has denied paying for the footage, maintaining that it was provided by individuals within the police force.
The arrests have heightened political tensions as Guyana hosts King Charles III and Queen Camilla for a two-day state visit.
Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy President Rickford Burke has called for mass protests over the arrests and what he described as the government’s misuse of the police force. He has also expressed the veiw that the Opposition Leader’s detention is intended to prevent him from participating in protests during the royal visit. That allegation has not been independently substantiated.
Hana’s reported injuries and hospitalisation raise further questions about the circumstances surrounding her latest detention. However, the events leading to her injuries have not yet been independently established.
This is a developing story. Further details will be published as they become available.
