Welcome to the Co-operative Republic of Guyana—the land of many waters and a vibrant tapestry of diverse cultures.

His Majesty’s arrival in Guyana today marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Guyana—a historical relationship that transitioned from colonial rule to a sovereign, independent state.

Mohamed and Orlando: The Law Must Follow the Evidence

As an Afro-Guyanese speaking on behalf of conscious African citizens across our nation, I extend a polite welcome, but I must also express our profound disappointment. We are deeply troubled by the lingering insensitivity toward the intergenerational trauma our people have endured—and continue to endure—as a result of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

As you are well aware, the economic power and wealth of the British monarchy were built upon one of the most inhumane and barbaric systems in human history. Our ancestors were stripped of their dignity, names, heritage, spiritual practices, and traditional way of life. To visit Guyana and the wider Caribbean while continuing to withhold a formal apology for these historical atrocities is an affront to the descendants of those who suffered. True reconciliation cannot occur without acknowledging this dark legacy, nor without committing to meaningful reparatory justice.

Furthermore, while we commend your scheduled engagement with our Indigenous leaders, we must ask: Where is the engagement with our African community leaders?

It is deeply concerning that your itinerary omits meetings with representatives of Afro-Guyanese organizations—the very leaders striving valiantly to preserve and rebuild the heritage that trans-Atlantic chattel slavery attempted to erase.

Your Majesty, enjoy your stay in our beautiful country. But as you experience our warm hospitality, we urge you to reflect on the debt of history, listen to all our people, and take meaningful steps toward true justice.
