Primary school students in Kalacoon, Coomacka and Rivers View now have access to robotics, coding and digital learning opportunities through the newly launched Science, Programming and Robotics for Resilient Kids (SPARRK) Lab, an education initiative funded by The Greater Guyana Initiative (GGI) and implemented by Project New Nation (PNN).

Launched in Bartica, the programme provides students in Grades 1 through 6 with hands-on exposure to technology while strengthening literacy and numeracy skills. Through interactive learning experiences, students will develop foundational digital competencies, critical thinking and problem-solving skills that can support their continued academic growth.

The initiative expands access to STEM education in communities where opportunities for technology-based learning may be limited. Students will participate in coding, robotics, animation and other technology-driven activities, while receiving targeted support designed to enhance literacy and numeracy outcomes.

Using differentiated learning approaches, the programme is tailored to meet students at their individual learning levels and help identify those who may require additional academic support. The initiative also promotes greater collaboration among schools, parents and community stakeholders to create a stronger support system for young learners.

Magaiva Gonsalves, Founder and Executive Director of Project New Nation, delivers remarks at the official launch of the SPARRK Lab.

Magaiva Gonsalves, Founder and Executive Director of Project New Nation, said the SPARRK Lab was developed from the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to explore their potential, regardless of where they live or the resources available to them.

“Talent exists everywhere, but access to opportunity does not always follow. Children in our communities have the curiosity, creativity and intelligence to become scientists, engineers, programmers and innovators. What they need is the environment, the tools and the guidance to develop those abilities. That is the gap SPARRK Lab seeks to address,” Magaiva said.

He added that the programme goes beyond introducing children to equipment and lessons, helping them build confidence and see themselves as creators of technology rather than simply consumers of it.

“Our programme is designed to nurture curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and resilience – skills that are essential not only for future careers, but also for navigating an increasingly technological world,” he said.

Alicia Bess-Anderson, Lead of The Greater Guyana Initiative, delivers remarks at the official launch of the SPARRK Lab.

Alicia Bess-Anderson, Lead of The Greater Guyana Initiative, highlighted the importance of STEM education in preparing young people for future opportunities.

“Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are no longer disciplines confined to the classroom. They are the foundation of innovation, the drivers of economic growth and the skills that will shape the future workforce. By investing in the SPARRK Lab, we are empowering young people to think critically, solve complex problems and seize every opportunity,” Bess-Anderson said.

She also commended Project New Nation for its vision and commitment to empowering young people through education.

In addition to the SPARRK Lab, Project New Nation spearheads the Literacy Learning Project funded by The Greater Guyana Initiative, which supports the development of foundational literacy skills among children. Together, these initiatives reflect PNN’s commitment to strengthening learning outcomes and expanding educational opportunities for young people in Guyana.
