Today, I remember Robert Corbin with gratitude and respect. A man whose influence extended beyond politics into the lives of young people and the communities he served.
Growing up in Festival City, just two blocks from his home, I witnessed and benefited from his community spirit firsthand. I vividly remember the regular fish distributions from his home, beginning as early as 4:30–5:00 a.m. Those early mornings remain etched in my memory: practical acts of generosity that reflected his care for his neighbors and his commitment to the well-being of our community.
Through his youth leadership, mentorship and community service, he helped instill in us discipline, responsibility and a proud sense of patriotism. He taught us that love for Guyana found its fullest expression in what we contributed, serving our neighbors, strengthening our communities and working together toward a better future.
Whether organizing youth brigades, meetings and outreach activities or working alongside those he led, he demonstrated that leadership carried an obligation to serve. His influence endures in the lessons we learned, the opportunities he helped create and the belief he nurtured that each of us had something valuable to offer our country.
As I reflect on his life, I remember both the national leader and the neighbor whose service began before dawn. That personal memory will always hold a special place in my understanding of his legacy.
Rest in peace, Robert Corbin. Thank you for your service, your generosity and the pride in Guyana you helped instill in generations of its young people
