Athletes and residents of Region Six will soon benefit from a newly built synthetic track at New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Charles Ramsn Jr. shared images of the track on his Facebook page, indicating that it will be commissioned sometime in a matter of weeks.
Meanwhile, the Regional Sports Officer of Region Six, Randy Mangru, told the Department of Public Information (DPI) on Monday that this is a major boost for sports in the region.
“This track will be beneficial to the athletes of Region Six in the sense that they will be able to practice athletics in a more modern facility that is all-weathered and can be used during the night and in the day,” he stated.
The venue will also feature an all-weather football field supported by advanced underground drainage systems, similar to those at the National Track and Field Centre and Bayroc National Stadium.
The development also includes the installation of modern spectator stands with a seating capacity of approximately 2,000 persons; the facility will be well-equipped to host regional and national competitions.
The venue features two pavilions, washrooms and adequate parking area among other conveniences
“I am happy that the synthetic track in Berbice is going to be finally commissioned by the People’s Progressive Party Civic Government,” Mangru stated.
On a previous visit to the site, Minister Ramson noted the importance of continued investment in sporting infrastructure, which he believes has a key role in driving the economy while fostering national pride. The facility was designed to meet the highest international standards.
The project has benefitted from international oversight to ensure compliance with global certification requirements.
A specialised technical team from REGUPOL supervised the installation of the synthetic track surface, a critical phase that determines the facility’s certification. This facility will significantly enhance sporting infrastructure in Berbice.
Minister Ramson said the track will remain accessible year-round, providing athletes and fitness enthusiasts with a reliable space for training and recreation. Proper maintenance systems and trained personnel will be put in place to ensure the facility’s longevity, including scheduled rest periods for the grass field to regenerate.
