The Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) on Wednesday publicly voiced concerns about the current promotion criteria affecting educators, using its social media platform to call for greater clarity and fairness in the system.
In a message accompanied by images of teachers dressed in black, the Union explained that the gesture was a peaceful and symbolic expression of concern. “Today we wore black, not out of anger, but out of concern,” the statement read.

The GTU emphasised that teachers devote years of training, dedicated service, and personal sacrifice to the profession, and indicated that many educators feel the existing promotion framework does not adequately reflect their commitment and experience. The Union expressed disappointment with the current process and urged the implementation of a system that is clear, transparent, and respectful of teachers’ contributions.

Highlighting the broader importance of equity within the education sector, the post concluded with the message: “Fairness matters. Respect matters. Teachers matter.”
The Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) is the recognised representative body for teachers across Guyana’s public education system. It advocates on behalf of educators at the nursery, primary, and secondary levels, addressing issues related to salaries, working conditions, professional development, and policy matters affecting the teaching profession. The Union also engages the Ministry of Education in collective bargaining and consultations aimed at strengthening the education sector.
