Two Cuban factory workers became the latest victims of an armed robbery after boarding a motorcar they believed was travelling toward Wales, according to police.

The incident occurred between approximately 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Friday in the Stanleytown area, West Bank Demerara.

The victims, aged 41 and 29, reportedly entered a silver-grey motorcar after being told it was heading in the direction of Wales. According to the police account, one of the suspects was sitting in the front passenger seat.

While the vehicle was in the Stanleytown area, the suspect allegedly produced a handgun and demanded the men’s belongings.

The workers were reportedly robbed of two cellular phones, a wristwatch, a wallet and G$8,000 cash before being ordered out of the vehicle.

The suspects then allegedly drove away.

Police have identified CCTV cameras in the area and are reviewing footage as the investigation continues. No arrests had been reported at the time of the latest update.

Workers and passenger safety

Although the material losses may appear modest, the circumstances of the robbery raise a wider public-safety concern.

The victims were workers travelling after work when, according to police, a vehicle they entered became the setting for an armed robbery.

The case highlights the vulnerability of people who depend on private or informal transportation, particularly at night.

It also illustrates the difference between national crime statistics and the experience of individual victims.

Government has reported an overall decline in serious crime during the first half of 2026, but individual armed robberies remain capable of producing fear far beyond the immediate victims.

For these two workers, the incident has transformed an ordinary journey into a potentially traumatic encounter with armed criminals.

Police are now relying partly on surveillance footage to identify the perpetrators.
