Consumers in seven U.S. states are being urged to check their refrigerators after Whole Foods Market recalled a specialty cheese because it contains an undeclared egg protein that could trigger a serious or potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published the recall notice on September 11, 2026, after Whole Foods announced the recall of Fromagerie Coop de Mean Cabricharme cheese, sold through the specialty cheese departments of 18 Whole Foods stores.

The affected states are Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island. The recalled cheese was cut and wrapped at Whole Foods stores and sold using the retailer’s scale labels.

The problem involves egg lysozyme, a protein derived from egg whites, which is present in the cheese but was not declared on the product label.

According to the FDA, people with an egg allergy or severe sensitivity face the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the affected product.

Products Affected

The recall covers two Cabricharme products:

  • Fromagerie Coop de Mean Cabricharme Raw Milk – Aged 60 Days — PLU 57953, with all best-by dates through and including October 7, 2026.
  • Belgian Cabricharme — PLU 54670.

The Raw Milk–Aged 60 Days product was sold in California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island, while the Belgian Cabricharme was sold in Arizona and California.

Whole Foods said the labeling problem was discovered by a store team member. The company has removed all affected products from store shelves, and no illnesses had been reported as of the FDA’s September 11 notice.

Consumers Urged to Destroy Product

Consumers who purchased the recalled cheese do not need to return it. Instead, Whole Foods is urging them to destroy the product.

Customers with a valid receipt can obtain a full refund from the store where the cheese was purchased. Consumers with questions can contact Whole Foods at 1-844-936-8255.

The recall highlights the particular risks posed by undeclared allergens. Unlike ordinary food-labeling errors, an undeclared allergen can expose consumers to a serious health risk without giving them the information needed to avoid the ingredient.

Consumers who have an egg allergy or severe sensitivity should therefore take particular care to check whether they have any of the recalled products before consuming them.

The FDA advises consumers to follow the recall instructions and avoid eating any affected cheese.
