More than $75 million in financial assistance has been provided to families affected by the MV Barima tragedy, as the government continues its coordinated recovery and support efforts through the H.E.A.R.T. Initiative.
Since its official launch back in July, the initiative has coordinated assistance for more than 750 affected persons across Regions One through Ten, providing support ranging from funeral and memorial expenses to housing, education, legal and psychosocial services.
According to a release from the secretariat, the initiative which is being led by Lead Coordinator Lieutenant Colonel Dominic Shepherd, has garnered more than $75 million in financial and material assistance helping families with funeral, memorial and wake-related expenses.
Educational assistance, including backpacks and school supplies, while food hampers continue to be distributed to affected households.
Additionally, housing support is also being advanced, with the Ministry of Housing approving 20 families for land and turn-key homes. Targeted relocation plans are also being developed for households displaced by the tragedy.
The initiative is also working to help affected families replace important documents lost in the tragedy.
Fast-track arrangements are being coordinated through the Guyana Elections Commission, Guyana Police Force and Guyana Revenue Authority for the replacement of national identification cards, passports and driver’s licences.
Meanwhile, the Attorney General’s Chambers is providing additional assistance to families on probate, estate and guardianship matters.
Psychosocial support remains a key part of the recovery process, with social workers and psychologists from the Ministries of Health, Human Services and Social Security, and Education providing higher-level trauma interventions in Regions One, Three, Four, Seven and Nine.
Support has also been received from the private sector. Corporate partners, including the Global Super League, have provided financial assistance, while telecommunications resources such as phones, SIM cards and data have been mobilised to help families remain connected and support the resumption of affected businesses.
The H.E.A.R.T. Secretariat has already conducted outreach and follow-up activities in Regions Four, Five and Six and is now moving into another phase of community-level assessments and direct interventions.
As part of the continued coordination of support, the Secretariat will meet with representatives from UNICEF on Wednesday, August 26, to finalise additional support frameworks.
The legal team will also shortly meet with affected families and their representatives in Region Four to provide guidance on legal matters arising from the tragedy.
The H.E.A.R.T. Initiative was formed to provide sustained support beyond the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, ensuring survivors, bereaved families and affected communities continue to receive the necessary assistance as they work towards recovery.
