(ECNS) — The concept of “Atoms for Global South” was included in the resolution on “Strengthening the IAEA’s technical cooperation activities” submitted by China and the Group of 77 on Thursday at the 68th IAEA General Conference.

Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the UN and other international organizations in Vienna, pointed out at the conference that development was the key to addressing the current global challenges, and it was essential to promote the “Global South” development through international cooperation.

The concept of Atoms for Global South, advocated by China and widely recognized by developing countries, aims to highlight the more urgent needs of these countries to use nuclear energy and technologies in a peaceful way, emphasizing the importance of the joint commitment of IAEA members to support the development of the Global South, said Li.

China will open 12 nuclear research facilities and testing platforms to international scientists and institutions to enhance global cooperation and promote technological innovation, he said.

“2024 marks the 40th anniversary of China’s accession to the IEAE. China will vigorously promote all-round cooperation with the IAEA and its member States and share its experience to contribute more to the realization of the concept of ‘Atoms for Global South’,” said Li.
