Dear Editor
I am begging you to help Guyanese like myself find answers based on some form of logic, years ago I participated in a lecture series in the Lodge area, talks were given by a variety of persons with political and financial experience, as a result I have a fair understanding of how a country should be managed, minus greed and corruption.
My first question is; Why are we giving away these massive concessions to foreigners to reap our unbelievable gold reserves, with no significant improvement in the lives of ordinary people? We have a government that appear to care little about giving away our God-given treasure. Gold was first discovered and mined by the freed Africans who sought alternative sources to make money. They turned their backs on the hardship and memories of the plantation preferring, as they did, to face the uncertainty and dangers of the interior.
Today, instead of leaving the gold to be mined by a younger generation of Guyanese who could acquire the skills and equipment to benefit from that gold, we have a government that in a very cavalier manner is giving away our lands to foreigners, the latest being companies from far off down-under, Australia. What is worrisome, what is painful, is that these companies are creating apartheid conditions in a country where Jagan and Burnham fought against such, on our way to Independence.
Next, we have a government that is boasting about how much investment is coming to Guyana, yet the exchange rate remains high, foreign exchange is scarce, and the cost of living remains high.
How long must this nonsense continue, when will our people stand up, take to the streets in peaceful protest, and say enough is enough.? The fact that these explorations are destroying our environment is another serious matter to be dealt with a little later. Guyanese wake-up from your slumber before it is too late.
