Colombia captured its first-ever men’s volleyball gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games on Saturday, defeating Puerto Rico 3-2 in a thrilling championship match at Santo Domingo 2026.

The Colombians prevailed 25-20, 25-21, 17-25, 17-25, 15-12 to complete an unbeaten run through the tournament and secure a historic triumph for the South American nation.

Colombia appeared to be cruising to victory after taking the opening two sets behind a disciplined defensive effort, strong blocking and an efficient attack. However, Puerto Rico mounted a spirited comeback, capitalizing as Colombia began to show signs of fatigue after a demanding week of competition.

Puerto Rico dominated the third and fourth sets by identical 25-17 scores, forcing a decisive fifth set and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

With momentum seemingly on Puerto Rico’s side, Colombia rediscovered its composure in the final set. Led by tournament Most Valuable Player Miguel Ángel Martínez, known as “Amaranto,” the Colombians rallied to close out the match 15-12 and seal the historic victory.

“The truth is, we feel relieved. We spent many years trying and losing. And with perseverance, and with this incredible group, winning this medal fills my heart with pride,” said Colombia’s Andrés Piza after the match.

“We made history—we’re the first to achieve this, but we won’t be the last. Today, a spectacular dream came true.”

Camilo Ambuila also reflected on the significance of the achievement as he celebrated with his wife and young daughter.

“It’s the greatest thing ever. It’s a dream come true, especially being here with my daughter and my wife—the people I love most. The feeling is indescribable,” he said.

“It’s a very young team, but at the same time, a very mature one. Thank you to all the guys for this joy.”

The victory marks a milestone for Colombian volleyball, with the team becoming the first from the country to win the men’s volleyball title at the Central American and Caribbean Games. Puerto Rico, also unbeaten entering the final, settled for the silver medal after pushing the champions to the limit in one of the tournament’s most memorable matches.
