By GHK Lall- A community is dealing with the grief of a death in the family. The community is wracked with sorrow that tugs, tears, at the heartstrings. Who is so low to send a squad of police into that vicinity of mourning? The PPP Govt did. Whatever the dispute, why at that time; surely, no one can be so coarse, so callous? The PPP Govt is. It exhibited this nakedness (its own) in an hour of national loss. A police search party at the residence of the Leader of the Opposition. Surely, there’s better use for the Police in this time of crisis. Apparently not, MP Duncan arrested, and Guyanese blocked and locked from helping in the search for bodies. Warm ones are out.
Guyanese are numb from well over a hundred men, women, and children dead. Trying to come to grips with a tragedy that traumatizes and terrorizes. Yet the PPP Govt is so cold-bloodedly ruthless, doggedly diabolical, to send a hunting party to a residence in search of evidence about a murder.
A capital offense, no doubt, with few ranking higher. If after five years, Mr. Mohamed had something-some trace, some speck, some thread-of evidence related to the police quest at his home, he shouldn’t be Opposition Leader. He belongs where the government seeks to push him.
Few are the citizens of this country dafter than me. I don’t think that applies to the Opposition Leader. What was the objective? Evidence? Really? A distraction from the multiple failures of leadership and governance is more likely.
Put the name Mohamed on the bullseye. Make him the convenient target. And there’s the newest readymade practice cardboard. Not for a murder on Main Street that the PPP Govt itself covered up. But to shift the microscope from the heads of ministers, leaders, and the entire government apparatus. The Police are aimed at Mohamed. The media has to follow the trajectory. The objective is for Guyanese to shift their eyes, their focus. Part of the business now normalised in the local environment.
Mohamed is a magnetic subject. Draws interest. Is irresistible. When compared to well over 100, maybe closer to 200, ordinary Guyanese dead and locked in the eternal embrace of the ocean. Why did the Hon Ms. Amanza Walton-Desir, MP, find it necessary to point in the direction of the government and its Police action in Friendship? To denounce the depraved indifference, the bestial callousness, of the PPP Govt calculated maneuver?
Guyanese get this: It is because the Guyanese people have these gangstas as their government. Political gangsters that have a long and sordid history of mingling with underworld gangsters. Gangsters hobnobbing with gangsters as their accomplices (phantom squads). Gangsters linking arms with gangsters as national security partners (death squads). Nothing from this government surprises anymore.
Who cares, what’s the bother, about a hundred or more dead due to PPP Govt gangsterism? With policy. With priorities. With patrimony. I expose the government some more: look at the kind of Guyanese that number mostly among the dead. The less of them there are, the more thrilling the One Guyana masquerade. This has been said many times before. Never grows old. Because the political and leadership soil is so rich. Whenever Guyanese think that the PPP Govt cannot go lower, it proves to them how wrong they are. I ponder how long this government thinks it can carry on at this rate.
The country is grieving and the time cannot be found to announce a period of national mourning. But the Police can be dispatched to search for evidence at a political opponent’s residence. Again, it must have something to do with the type of people that drowned. The government has one eye on the clock (how long the MV Barima stays in the public’s mind). The other eye is cocked at Mohamed, along with anxiety over what he will reveal next. It is not mourning in my book. It is someone pretending to be a grief stricken, while smoothly positioning himself to pick another’s pocket at a wake house.
