The promise of a young footballer whose talent had begun to shine on the national stage has been tragically extinguished by the MV Barima disaster, with the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and Blue Water Shipping Guyana Inc. mourning the loss of 14-year-old Shamera Smith of White Water Village, Region One.
Shamera was among the passengers aboard the 87-year-old MV Barima when it capsized late Saturday during its voyage from Georgetown to Port Kaituma. Her body was recovered on Monday, adding another heartbreaking name to the growing list of victims of what has become one of Guyana’s deadliest maritime tragedies.
Just weeks before the tragedy, Shamera proudly represented Wauna Primary School in the Blue Water Shipping Girls Under-15 National Championship, a tournament aimed at nurturing the next generation of female footballers across Guyana. Her participation reflected not only her love for the sport but also the determination and potential that inspired teammates, coaches and her community.
In a joint statement, the Guyana Football Federation and Blue Water Shipping Guyana Inc. said the young athlete’s passing has left the football community in mourning.
“Shamera’s participation in the championship reflected her passion for football and the promise she carried as a young athlete. Her untimely passing is a heartbreaking loss for her family, teammates, school, community, and the wider football fraternity.”
The federation and its tournament partner extended condolences to those mourning her loss.
“On behalf of the President, Council and the wider football community, the GFF and Blue Water Shipping Guyana Inc. extend our heartfelt condolences to Shamera’s family, friends, teammates, and all those affected by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.”
The organisations also paid tribute to the lasting impact the teenager made during her short life.
“May her memory be a lasting source of strength and comfort to those who knew and loved her.”
The statement concluded with a message of solidarity to every family devastated by the maritime disaster.
“To every family affected by this tragedy, our heartfelt condolences are with you during this time of profound grief.”
The MV Barima disaster has claimed dozens of lives and devastated communities across Guyana, particularly in Region One, where many passengers were returning home after conducting business, seeking medical care or visiting relatives. Among those lost are children, parents, students and workers—each leaving behind shattered families and unfulfilled dreams.
For the football fraternity, Shamera’s passing is a poignant reminder that beyond every statistic is a life filled with hope and potential.
