The Alliance For Change (AFC) is deeply saddened by the tragic capsizing of the MV Barima and extends its heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all those affected by this distressing incident. As search and rescue operations continue, we remain hopeful that every effort will result in the safe recovery of all those who were on board. We pray for the safety of the passengers and crew, for strength and comfort for their families and loved ones, and for the full and speedy recovery of those who may have been injured.
The AFC commends the courageous efforts of the Guyana Defence Force, the Maritime Administration Department, emergency responders, medical personnel, and the many volunteers who have mobilized to assist in the ongoing search and rescue operation. Their dedication and selfless service during this difficult time are deserving of the nation’s gratitude.
Additionally, we expect that the advanced and Guyanese-bought, Search and Rescue equipment and facilities, including state-of-the art helicopters, that are currently available for Exxon’s operations in the Stabroek Block, will be made available to assist the authorities.
We urge all Guyanese to keep those affected in their prayers and to allow the rescue teams the space and support they need to carry out this critical mission.
Once the immediate emergency has passed, it will be important for the relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and just as importantly, the response to it, so that lessons can be learned and appropriate measures implemented to further strengthen safety on our waterways.
The AFC stands in solidarity with the families anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones and with everyone involved in the rescue efforts. May God grant protection to those still unaccounted for, wisdom and strength to the rescue teams, and comfort to every family during these anxious hours.
