Dear Editor,
The renewed attention being given to the investigation into the 2021 murder of Ricardo “Paper Shorts” Fagundes has once again placed the spotlight on Guyana’s criminal justice system. Every murder deserves a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation, regardless of who the victim may be.
However, while the authorities continue to pursue this case, many Guyanese are asking an equally important question: What is the status of the investigation into the 2006 execution-style killing of then Agriculture Minister Satyadeow “Sash” Sawh, his siblings, and a security guard?
That horrific attack occurred during the presidency of Bharrat Jagdeo, at the height of the violent crime wave that gripped Guyana. Nearly two decades later, the public deserves to know whether the investigation remains active, what progress has been made, and whether anyone will ever be held accountable.
Justice cannot be selective. If the Government expects the public to have confidence in law enforcement, it must demonstrate the same commitment to solving all major crimes, irrespective of when they occurred or the political circumstances surrounding them.
The Guyanese people are therefore entitled to an official update on the Sash Sawh investigation. Transparency is essential to maintaining public trust in the administration of justice.
Absent such transparency, questions will inevitably be asked about whether some investigations receive greater urgency than others and whether political considerations influence law enforcement priorities. Those are questions no democratic society should have to ask.
Yours truly,
England Gomes
