Digicel Guyana has announced free unlimited calls to Venezuela in a humanitarian gesture aimed at helping customers reconnect with loved ones following the devastating earthquakes that have left thousands dead and injured across the neighbouring South American nation.
The telecommunications provider said the initiative takes immediate effect, allowing customers to contact family members, friends and business associates without worrying about the cost of international calls as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
Venezuela was struck on June 24 by twin earthquakes—a magnitude 7.2 foreshock followed seconds later by a magnitude 7.5 mainshock—that caused widespread destruction across the country’s northern region. The heaviest damage was reported in Caracas and La Guaira, where the death toll has climbed into the thousands, with thousands more injured and many people still unaccounted for as emergency crews continue search-and-rescue operations.
Recognising the close social, cultural and economic ties between Guyana and Venezuela, Digicel Guyana said the initiative is intended to help customers remain connected during one of the country’s darkest moments.
“As a Caribbean neighbour, Guyana stands in solidarity with Venezuela during this crisis,” the company said, noting that many Guyanese have family, friends and business connections across the border.
Chief Executive Officer of Digicel Guyana and Suriname, Deonarine Gopaul, said communication is especially important during times of tragedy.
“In moments like these, connection is everything. We want our customers to be able to check on their loved ones, offer support, and stay close to the people who matter most without worrying about the cost of a phone call.”
Digicel Guyana said the offer is effective immediately and encouraged customers to use the service to reach out to those affected by the disaster, provide reassurance and maintain contact with family members during the ongoing humanitarian response.
Telecommunications companies have frequently introduced similar emergency measures following major natural disasters around the world, recognising that reliable communication can be vital for families seeking information about the safety and well-being of relatives.
Digicel Guyana said it hopes the initiative will provide meaningful support to customers as Venezuela continues the difficult task of recovering from one of the country’s most destructive natural disasters in recent history.
