The death of 16-year-old Altaf King following a police pursuit on the Corentyne has sparked anger and grief in his community, with residents demanding answers and questioning the conduct of the officer involved.

King, of Eliza Mary Race Course, Corentyne, Berbice, died on Thursday, June 25, 2026, after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a utility pole on Princeton Access Road.

According to the Guyana Police Force, preliminary investigations indicate that King was riding motorcycle CL 5607 when he allegedly attempted to evade a police patrol, lost control of the motorcycle and collided with the pole. He was taken to the No. 75 Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

However, residents who gathered at the scene painted a more troubling picture of the incident.

One person at the scene, who asked not to be identified, alleged that the police officer involved has frequently harassed young motorcycle riders in the area and said tensions between the officer and youths in the community have existed for some time.

Witnesses said police gave chase after the teenager allegedly refused to stop. It remains unverified whether any contact was made between the police vehicle and the young man’s motorcycle during the pursuit. What is clear, however, is that another young life has been lost, leaving a family and community in mourning.

The Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The Guyana Police Force recognises the seriousness of this matter and assures the relatives of the deceased and members of the public that appropriate action will be taken should any criminal or disciplinary culpability be established,” the Force said in a statement.

The teenager’s death sparked protests in sections of the Corentyne on Thursday evening, with residents burning debris and blocking roads as they demanded answers and accountability.

Meanwhile, the young man’s school, the Skeldon Line Path Secondary School, paid tribute to him in a heartfelt statement.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Skeldon Line Path Secondary School family mourns the tragic passing of our beloved student, Altaf King,” the school said.

“Altaf was a valued student of our school community, and his untimely passing has deeply affected us all. During this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his parents, family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved him.”

The school said it stood united in grief and remembrance of the teenager, adding, “Gone too soon, but never forgotten.”

As investigators work to establish exactly what transpired in the moments before the crash, residents say they will continue to press for transparency and justice in the death of the young student whose life ended far too soon.
