The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) of Georgetown has signed a contract with Brass Aluminum and Cast-Iron Foundry Limited (BACIF) to manufacture and install 100 cast-iron manhole covers as part of the first phase of an initiative aimed at improving public safety and strengthening the city’s infrastructure.
According to the M&CC, the project is intended to replace deteriorating wooden manhole covers with more durable cast-iron alternatives that are expected to provide a longer-lasting solution while reducing maintenance costs.
For years, uncovered and damaged manholes have posed hazards to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists throughout Georgetown, contributing to accidents, injuries and damage to vehicles. The council said the new cast-iron covers will help address those longstanding safety concerns while enhancing the appearance of the capital.
The city noted that its previous reliance on wooden covers proved to be a temporary measure because the covers deteriorated quickly and required frequent replacement.
Officials said the installation of cast-iron covers represents an investment in more resilient public infrastructure that is expected to improve both safety and the efficiency of municipal maintenance operations over the long term.
Beyond the safety benefits, the council believes the project will contribute to a cleaner and more modern urban environment by improving the condition of sidewalks and roadways while restoring damaged manholes and bridges.
The initiative also supports local manufacturing through the partnership with Brass Aluminum and Cast-Iron Foundry Limited, allowing the project to utilize locally produced infrastructure components.
According to the M&CC, restoring and protecting manholes and bridges will improve accessibility throughout Georgetown, promote safer movement for residents and visitors, and strengthen public confidence in municipal services.
The installation of the first 100 cast-iron manhole covers marks the initial phase of what the council described as a broader effort to modernize Georgetown’s infrastructure and create a safer, more attractive and sustainable capital city.
