The Masquerade Association of Guyana Inc. has expressed profound sorrow following the tragic drowning deaths of young masquerader Loydicia Waldron, her fiancé Andri Francis, and their unborn child at Unity Beach on the East Coast of Demerara. The incident occurred on May 26, 2026.
In a statement issued this week, the Association extended condolences to its board members, Raphael Waldron and Jacqueline Charles, who are respectively the father and aunt of the deceased young woman.
“The Association joins the wider masquerade fraternity and the people of Guyana in mourning their untimely deaths by drowning at Unity Beach on the East Coast of Demerara,” the statement said.
Masquerade, one of Guyana’s oldest surviving folk traditions, traces its roots to West African cultural practices brought to the Caribbean during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Over centuries, the tradition evolved in Guyana into a distinctive form of street theatre combining music, dance, elaborate costumes, stilt-walking and masked performances, becoming an enduring symbol of the country’s African cultural heritage and community identity.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the country’s cultural community, particularly among practitioners of the traditional Guyanese masquerade artform, where the Waldron family has long played a prominent role.
According to the Association, Loydicia Waldron was an enthusiastic participant in Guyana’s masquerade tradition from a young age and was well known within cultural circles for her involvement in schools’ masquerade competitions.
“Loydicia was a young and enthusiastic performer of Guyana’s Masquerade tradition. She participated in numerous schools’ Masquerade competitions and demonstrated a genuine passion for preserving and promoting this cherished aspect of our cultural heritage,” the Association noted.
The organisation said her commitment to the artform and vibrant personality left a lasting impression on many within the masquerade community.
The Waldron family has been at the forefront of efforts to preserve the cultural tradition on the East Coast of Demerara and beyond.
Raphael Waldron serves as Band Leader of the Victoria Lucky Stars Masquerade Band, one of the best-known masquerade groups in the country. His sister, Jacqueline Charles (Waldron), is the founder and band leader of the Fyah in the Land Masquerade Band. Both have been recognised for their contributions to sustaining the artform and mentoring younger performers.
“The Waldron family has been deeply involved in the preservation and promotion of Masquerade traditions on the East Coast of Demerara and throughout Guyana for generations,” the Association stated.
Messages of sympathy have continued to pour in from members of the masquerade fraternity both locally and overseas.
Association member and musician Edwin Mansook, speaking from Canada, described the loss as deeply painful for the cultural community.
“I am saddened to learn of the recent loss within our masquerade community—a young and promising masquerader. It is deeply felt,” Mansook said.
President of the Masquerade Association of Guyana Inc., Jocelyne Josiah, who is currently overseas, also expressed grief upon learning of the tragedy.
“Though I am away from Guyana at this time, my thoughts and prayers are with Raphael, Jacqueline, their family, and all who mourn this heartbreaking loss. The passing of Loydicia and Andri is a profound tragedy for the Masquerade community and especially for the Waldron family, whose contribution to preserving this cultural artform has been invaluable. May they find strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time,” Josiah stated.
The Association extended its sympathies to the Waldron and Francis families, friends, fellow masqueraders and all others affected by the tragedy.
“We send care and condolences today and evermore. May they always be remembered with love as they rest in eternal peace,” the statement concluded.
The deaths have cast a shadow over Guyana’s cultural community, with many remembering Loydicia not only as a promising young performer but also as part of a family whose dedication has helped keep one of the country’s most treasured folk traditions alive.
