By Mark DaCosta- The A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has issued a strong condemnation of alarming incidents of alleged police violence, asserting that these events highlight an unsettling regression reminiscent of past abuses. Central to their concerns are the tragic cases of Jordan Payne and Mr. Perriera, which, says APNU, signal a profound crisis of accountability within the Guyana Police Force.

The distressing death of 30-year-old Jordan Payne while being held in custody at the Cove & John Police Station raises serious questions regarding the safety of detainees and the conduct of law enforcement officers. The official account attributes his demise to medical complications; however, many fear that the nuances of his detention and the involvement of police officers tell a far more sinister story. The circumstances surrounding his passing cannot simply be overlooked, as they compound the growing fear of a return to pervasive state violence.

Equally disturbing is the report concerning Mr. Perriera, who was allegedly taken into custody under dubious circumstances only to face horrific treatment thereafter. Accounts have revealed that Mr. Perriera was not only beaten but also subjected to electric shocks before being left in a state that severely compromises his ability to communicate or even breathe properly. The discrepancies in the police’s narrative — including unsubstantiated claims related to seizures — have exacerbated public scepticism and distrust towards the authorities. The APNU insists that the “conflicting and implausible explanations provided by police” point to a deeper systemic issue that must not be ignored.

“This is not merely about individual misconduct. It is about systemic failure,” the APNU stated, highlighting the role of inadequate leadership and political interference in fostering an environment where police misconduct can thrive unchecked. As citizens begin to question whether they are witnessing the re-emergence of a historic cycle of “state-sanctioned abuse,” the APNU’s assertions strike a chord with those who remember the painful memories from the early 2000s. The coalition’s call for these recent injustices to be examined independently echoes a broader demand for accountability and reform.

The APNU is imploring the government to initiate a thorough and unbiased investigation into both cases to ensure justice for the victims and their families. There is a pressing need for comprehensive reform within the Guyana Police Force as well, including the removal and prosecution of any officers found to be complicit in wrongdoings. The coalition asserts, “The Guyanese people cannot forget the era when allegations of extrajudicial actions, custodial deaths, and unchecked police excesses became tragically common.”

The growing concern about police brutality reflects a broader societal anxiety regarding the state of governance and the protection of civil liberties in our country. The APNU’s vocal stance against these abuses stems from a stated commitment to uphold justice and safeguard the rights of citizens against those who wield power without accountability. Their appeal for civic vigilance resonates strongly within a populace all too aware of historical injustices, making it essential for citizens to remain alert and engaged in the fight against systemic oppression.

As scrutiny intensifies around incidents like those involving Payne and Mr. Perriera, the implications are significant: a growing movement calling for accountability and reform to prevent further tragedies. In standing against police brutality, the APNU clearly expresses a core belief that every Guyanese deserves protection and respect from those entrusted to uphold the law.
