Guyana on Thursday officially launched its 60th Independence Anniversary celebrations under the theme “Homecoming,” signalling a year-long series of cultural, tourism and heritage activities to mark the country’s Diamond Jubilee.
The launch, held at the Railway Courtyard in Georgetown, outlined an ambitious calendar of events designed to celebrate national achievements while encouraging Guyanese in the diaspora to reconnect with their homeland.
Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Susan Rodrigues said the initiative is both reflective and forward-looking, inviting Guyanese abroad to return and participate in what she described as a defining national moment. She noted that the celebrations come against the backdrop of growing international interest in Guyana, with increased visitor arrivals and recognition in major global publications.
Among the headline events is the return of the Guyana Festival, scheduled for May 15–17 at the Guyana National Stadium, featuring heritage villages, cultural performances, cuisine and entertainment. Additional activities will include the “Taste of Guyana” culinary showcase, heritage tours, and regional events such as food festivals, river experiences and camping activities aimed at highlighting communities across the country.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips said the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the country’s progress in areas such as democracy, education and economic development, while reinforcing national pride.
Traditional events, including the Independence Flag Raising Ceremony and National Interfaith Service, are also planned, alongside the Guyana Carnival Independence Weekend, organised in partnership with private sector stakeholders.
The broader 2026 programme will feature major events such as fashion showcases, worship experiences and regional tourism conferences, underscoring efforts to position Guyana as a cultural and tourism destination.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. said the celebrations reflect a spirit of unity and shared identity, noting that the milestone offers a chance to celebrate both the country’s journey and its future direction.
The “Homecoming” initiative is expected to serve as both a tribute to Guyana’s past and a platform to showcase its evolving national identity on the global stage.
