Dear Editor,
As a concerned citizen and a committed Trade Union Advocate, deeply invested in the welfare and dignity of the Guyanese workforce.
Guyanese people have long been recognized for their resilience, dedication, and strong work ethic.
 Across every sector, our workers continue to give their time, energy, and skills to build this nation and provide for their families. Their contribution to Guyana’s development is both significant and deserving of the highest respect.
However, there is growing unease among many workers regarding the conditions under which they are employed and the compensation they receive. There have been persistent allegations of labor rights violations, the circumvention of established labor laws, and a lack of respect for workers’ rights and their representatives, particularly trade unions.
These concerns have been raised in relation to a number of businesses operating across Guyana, including some that are foreign-owned and managed. While investment and international partnerships are important to our country’s progress, they must never come at the expense of the dignity and rights of the Guyanese worker.
 Development must be fair, inclusive, and respectful of our laws.
Every worker is entitled to fair wages, safe working conditions, and the freedom to be represented by a union of their choice without fear, intimidation, or victimization. Trade unions play a vital role in maintaining balance in the workplace and ensuring that workers’ voices are heard and respected.
As a nation, we must continue to encourage economic growth, but we must do so without compromising the rights and humanity of our people. True development is measured not only by investment, but by how well we treat those who contribute to it daily.
I urge all stakeholders—government, employers, and civil society—to take these concerns seriously and to work collectively toward a fairer and more just working environment for all Guyanese.
