On the observance of International Women’s Day 2026, under the global theme “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”, the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) extends warm greetings and solidarity to the women of Guyana and across the world.

Today we honour the strength, resilience, and determination of women whose contributions are indispensable to the development of our society. We pay special tribute to women in the workforce—those in factories, farms, offices, hospitals, schools, shops, construction sites, the public service, and countless other workplaces—whose labour sustains families, drives productivity, and strengthens our national economy. Women workers continue to play a vital role in every sector, often balancing professional responsibilities with the demands of family and community life.

The Congress recognises that despite important gains, many women workers continue to confront persistent challenges, including unequal pay, job insecurity, unsafe working conditions, discrimination, and limited access to leadership opportunities. These realities call for continued vigilance and strong advocacy from the labour movement to ensure that women are treated with fairness, dignity, and respect in every workplace.

This year’s theme reminds us that the full realisation of rights, equality, and empowerment for all women and girls is essential to building just societies and sustainable economies. It also reinforces the importance of ensuring that women workers have equal opportunities, strong labour protections, and meaningful representation in decision-making spaces.

On this International Women’s Day, the GTUC reaffirms its commitment to advancing gender equality, decent work, and social justice. The Congress will continue to support policies, protections, and initiatives that uplift and empower women workers. As the leadership of the Congress has consistently affirmed, the struggle for workers’ rights must always include the advancement and protection of women’s rights.

The Guyana Trades Union Congress salutes the courage, sacrifices, and achievements of women everywhere. When women are empowered in the workplace and society, the entire nation moves forward.

Happy International Women’s Day.
