Renewing the Struggle for Justice, Dignity and Workers’ Rights

The Guyana Trades Union Congress(GTUC) extends warm Phagwah greetings to all workers and their families across our beautiful nation.

Phagwah, the festival of colours, reminds us of the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and justice over injustice. It is a celebration of renewal, hope, and the enduring power of unity. As workers gather in joy and fellowship, we are reminded that our greatest victories—like the vibrant colours of this season—are born from solidarity, courage, and collective struggle.

The story at the heart of Phagwah speaks to resistance against oppression and faith in the possibility of change. In the same spirit, the labour movement in Guyana has always stood firm against exploitation, discrimination, and inequality. Our history is written in the sacrifices of dock workers, sugar workers, bauxite workers, public servants, teachers, nurses, and all those who dared to demand dignity and fair treatment.

This season challenges us not only to celebrate, but to recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle for:

  • Decent wages that keep pace with the rising cost of living
  • Safe and healthy working conditions
  • Respect for collective bargaining and trade union recognition
  • Secure employment and social protection for all workers

Phagwah teaches that when people stand united, injustice cannot prevail. As the colours blend without losing their distinct beauty, so too must our diverse workforce stand together in common cause—across race, religion, and sector—to defend and advance workers’ rights.

At this time, we call upon the government led by President Irfaan Ali to honour its commitments to working people. We urge meaningful engagement with the trade union movement, respect for established labour laws, timely collective bargaining negotiations, and policies that ensure the wealth of our nation benefits those whose labour creates it.

As Guyana stands at a pivotal moment of economic transformation, fueled by unprecedented growth, it is imperative that development does not come at the expense of workers’ rights. True progress must be measured not only in GDP, but in improved livelihoods, strengthened labour protections, and expanded opportunities for all.

Let this Phagwah renew our determination. Let it strengthen our solidarity. Let it remind us that just as colours burst forth after darkness, justice and fairness will prevail through unity and struggle.

Happy Phagwah to all.

Solidarity forever.
