Fort Island Independence Ceremony Left Citizens Feeling Disrespected

The United Workers Party condemns in the strongest and most unequivocal terms the decision by Speaker Hon. Manzoor Nadir to restrict media access to Guyana’s National Assembly during the 2026 Budget debates.

Allowing only five reporters into the chamber—while reserving full camera coverage for state media—amounts to nothing short of state-controlled information. This is not transparency; this is censorship. It is a clear attempt to manage narratives rather than allow the Guyanese people to see and hear the truth for themselves.
Democracy does not belong to those in power—it belongs to the people. When independent media is silenced, workers, families, and communities lose their voice. History teaches us that the erosion of democracy begins when scrutiny is suppressed and dissent is treated as inconvenience.
The United Workers Party stands firmly with all aggrieved media houses and demands an immediate end to this authoritarian practice. We call on journalists to resist intimidation and remain steadfast in their duty to the public.
Guyanese must not accept the quiet disappearance of democracy. We must call it out, confront it, and defend our freedoms—before they are gone.
Yours truly
Lorenzo Joseph
