By Mark DaCosta- In the heart of our bustling capital, the Stabroek Market has long been a symbol of commerce and community spirit. Yet, recent visits by notable political figures have unveiled a distressing reality: the market is grappling with chronic neglect, raising concerns about the fate of this iconic structure.

During a recent inspection, Azruddin Mohamed, leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, alongside other prominent stakeholders, assessed the deplorable conditions that vendors and shoppers are enduring at this historically significant site. Their findings reveal a troubling decline that calls into question the local government’s commitment to maintaining one of Georgetown’s most cherished landmarks. The critique is pointed, aimed squarely at the Ministry of Local Government and the Georgetown Mayor and City Council for their apparent inaction.

Mohamed and his colleagues highlighted a disturbing array of issues that plague the market. Drains are in dire need of desilting, leading to unsanitary conditions that threaten public health. Unsightly garbage piles up around the Parliament Building — the very venue where our leaders should convene to discuss laws designed to ensure a clean and safe environment.

With no constables on duty, vendors and customers alike find themselves vulnerable to theft, as reports of robbery swirl in the vicinity of the market. Public washrooms remain in a dire state of disrepair; external facilities have been non-functional since February of the previous year, while those inside are described as unclean and inadequate for public use. The lack of sufficient maintenance personnel exacerbates these issues, creating a daunting atmosphere of neglect.

The current state of Stabroek Market is not merely an inconvenience — it reflects a broader narrative of disarray within our nation’s local governance. It stands as a poignant example of how the priorities of our leaders have shifted, with pivotal issues of sanitation and security sidelined for more pressing political agendas. Mohamed’s call to action demands immediate attention from the authorities: “These conditions are unacceptable and reflect a neglect of one of Guyana’s most historic markets.”

Stabroek Market’s historical significance cannot be overstated. Since the late 18th century, this site has evolved from a makeshift trading area to a thriving commercial hub. The current structure, completed in 1881, was a pioneering feat of engineering, designed to be fireproof with its cast-iron and steel construction. It has stood tall as a testament to our architectural heritage, articulated beautifully by its iconic Victorian Gothic design and the landmark clock tower that has served as a timekeeper for generations.

More than just an architectural marvel, Stabroek Market has played a vital role in the cultural fabric of our nation. It has served as a melting pot, showcasing the diverse ethnicities of our citizens, a prime spot for commerce across social strata, and an enduring symbol of resilience through turbulent political climates. Yet, despite its storied legacy, the market now faces the risk of losing its status as a vibrant heart of our city due to governmental negligence.

The absence of consistent maintenance and proactive measures to ensure a safe and clean environment undermines the market’s integrity. As the cries for immediate action resound from Mohamed and his party, it is clear that the burden falls on our current administration to rectify these issues. “We cannot simply stand by and allow one of our country’s most important historical sites to deteriorate further,” Mohamed asserted.

In essence, the deteriorating conditions at Stabroek Market reflect a deeper malaise within our local government, suggesting a concerning disconnect between legislative intentions and ground-level realities. The neglect of such a vital commercial hub poses questions about the administration’s priorities and accountability.

According to analylsts, we grapple with the implications of this neglect, it is imperative for our community to rally together. The future of Stabroek Market hinges not only on the efforts of its vendors and patrons but on the will of our leaders to address these pressing concerns.
