Dear Editor,

Guyana, it is time for citizens to take to the streets through organised protests. The installed dictatorship of President Irfaan Ali must follow the Constitution. Article 184(1) of the Constitution is very clear: “The Leader of the Opposition shall be elected by and from among the non-governmental members of the National Assembly at a meeting held under the chairmanship of the Speaker of the National Assembly, who shall not have the right to vote.”

Months after the September 1, 2025 Election, the results have still not been certified by the constitutional body, GECOM. This deliberate delay by the government is a violation of our Constitution.

We call on opposition parties to organise coordinated protests until the government complies with the Constitution and facilitates the election of the new Leader of the Opposition. The people of Guyana must hold those in power accountable and defend the democratic principles enshrined in our Constitution.

Yours truly,

Egland Gomes
