By Mark DaCosta- The political upheaval in Venezuela is raising significant concerns among citizens in our nation. The Alliance for Change (AFC) has issued a strong call for heightened awareness as the situation develops, stressing the importance of preparedness in response to potential consequences for Guyana.
With reports of a regime change occurring in Venezuela, the AFC has underscored the necessity for our nation to remain vigilant. While the removal of Nicolás Maduro might signal a shift, it does not eliminate Venezuela’s longstanding territorial ambitions, particularly concerning Essequibo. This issue remains a contentious point of national pride and sovereignty for Guyana.
The AFC has alerted the public to be on guard for “agents” that may attempt to undermine security within our borders. These operatives are believed to be covertly working to influence events in Guyana, a concern echoed by former Minister Robeson Benn. In their statement, the AFC has urged law enforcement and security forces to adopt a fortified and alert posture at crucial points, such as borders and urban areas. They also encourage citizens to remain aware of any suspicious activities that might indicate foreign interference.
The geopolitical ramifications of changes in Venezuela are broad, calling for a cohesive and strategic response from our leaders. The AFC is appealing to regional allies and the international community for prudent decision-making as they navigate the complexities that lie ahead. They emphasise that “The Caribbean must remain a zone of peace and democracy must be allowed to flourish,” reinforcing the region’s commitment to democratic values and the importance of protecting them from external threats.
Moreover, the AFC expresses doubt about the current government’s ability to act decisively as these events unfold. They assert that the Irfaan Ali administration has a fundamental obligation to keep citizens informed about any protective measures being implemented to safeguard lives and property amid this changing security environment. They argue that the administration has a “moral and legal responsibility” to communicate transparently about plans related to national security.
The looming threat of Venezuelan territorial claims demands a proactive approach from our leaders. Citizens must understand the historical context of our complex relationship with Venezuela, as the Essequibo issue is not just a lingering dispute but a matter deeply tied to our national identity. As developments in Venezuela continue to unfold, maintaining a focus on sovereignty is crucial.
The AFC’s call for vigilance is a unifying message, urging citizens to come together and acknowledge the risks posed by external influences, as well as the internal weaknesses that may leave the country susceptible. They invite all to embrace active participation in the democratic process, countering complacency with engagement.
At this critical juncture, it is vital for the nation to foster discussions around national security, sovereignty, and our collective future. The AFC’s stance highlights the urgent requirement for a comprehensive government strategy to address these challenges, to avoid being caught unprepared amid external pressures.
As Guyana navigates this pivotal moment, it is essential that every citizen remains vigilant and is prepared for any developments that could arise from Venezuela’s evolving political climate. Our strength lies in unity; as we safeguard our national interests, we must also demand accountability from those holding positions of power, ensuring they uphold their responsibilities in protecting our democracy and territorial integrity. The future of our nation hangs in the balance, calling for active participation from all sectors of society in securing our shared destiny.
