US Military Moves Raise Regional Tensions

By Mark DaCosta- As the geopolitical landscape in Latin America shifts dramatically, the recent developments in Venezuela signal a precarious turn that demands urgent attention from our nation and our government. Reports indicate that Nicolás Maduro, the President of Venezuela, has been forcibly removed from power and is purportedly en route to New York aboard a US naval vessel, the USS Iwo Jima.

This is not merely a matter of foreign affairs; it poses direct and immediate challenges to our country that cannot be ignored. The apparent military intervention by the United States raises concerns not just about Venezuela’s future but about the stability of our region and the integrity of our own national security.

At the heart of this unfolding crisis is the strategic manoeuvring of powerful states, particularly the United States, which seems intent on reshaping the political dynamics of its neighbours. The implications are manifold, affecting everything from our territorial integrity to socio-economic stability. The potential for an influx of Venezuelan refugees, coupled with the threat of military incursion, places our nation at a critical juncture.

The Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) has aptly pointed out the dangers of silence and complacency during such tumultuous times, asserting that “silence is neglect.” The Guyanese government has a compelling duty to provide clear, consistent communication regarding the measures being taken to safeguard our people and borders.

The risks presented by a destabilised Venezuela are strikingly acute. Historically, regimes under threat have often resorted to conflict diversion as a means of rallying domestic support. This could precipitate aggressive actions towards our Essequibo region, which lies adjacent to a now volatile Venezuela.

The spectre of a militarised border, escalating tensions, and increased cross-border skirmishes with Venezuelan paramilitary groups can no longer be dismissed as theoretical. We must recognise that our limited defence capabilities make us a prime target should Venezuela seek to bolster its own precarious standing by asserting territorial claims against us.

Moreover, the potential for economic disruption is considerable. Our nation’s economic vitality is increasingly tethered to its burgeoning oil sector, which could become a prime target should Venezuela opt for aggression. The expression of vulnerability is painted clearly when we consider the implications of a conflict on vital infrastructure such as the Floating Production Storage and Offloading units utilised by ExxonMobil.

Even the mere threat of military action could deter investment and disrupt oil production, infringing upon the very financial lifeblood of our country. “A single kinetic strike near an ExxonMobil facility could force a total shutdown of production,” illustrating the precarious nature of our dependence on this industry.

Additionally, the humanitarian implications stemming from a potential influx of refugees cannot be underestimated. With millions possibly displaced, our already strained resources may be overwhelmed. The response from our government must not only address immediate security concerns but also prepare for a long-term strategy in managing any humanitarian crisis. The potential for social upheaval and fractured relations within our communities as a result of demographic shifts further complicates our responsibility to respond promptly and decisively.

According to one analyst,  in light of these urgent realities, it is paramount that the Guyanese government articulates a coherent strategy and displays unequivocal leadership. The call for transparency and open dialogue with the public is not merely a request — it is a necessity. “The Guyanese people deserve leadership that respects their intelligence and treats them as partners,” as highlighted by civic advocates. Our leaders must step forward to confront these developments with clarity, rather than retreat into ambiguity.

It is dismaying to observe a lack of decisive action from the current administration, particularly given the high stakes involved. The government must take a definitive stand and engage actively in diplomatic efforts to avert potential conflict while reinforcing our defence posture. In this charged atmosphere, sitting on the fence is simply not an option. We face a critical moment in our history where failure to respond could yield catastrophic consequences for our future.

The analyst  said, “our nation must rise to the challenge and protect its sovereignty against external pressures, preparing for whatever tumult may arise as US policies spur on instability in the region. The time to act is now, and the stakes have never been higher for the people of our homeland.”
