Patients, staff and visitors at Davis Memorial Hospital were once again uplifted on Monday as the Guyana Police Force Band delivered its annual Christmas performance in the hospital’s foyer, filling the space with music, joy and festive spirit. The yearly event, hosted by the hospital, featured a selection of well-loved Christmas carols including “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” “Joy to the World,” “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Merry Christmas,” among others.  The performance forms part of a yearly Christmas event hosted by the hospital to spread joy and uplift patients during their recovery.

Several hospitalised patients came downstairs to enjoy the performance, some assisted in wheelchairs, while others listened attentively from nearby areas. Outpatients, visitors and staff paused their routines to take in the music. The expressions of joy on patients’ faces were a powerful reminder of the psychosocial impact such initiatives can have, as positive emotional experiences are known to support wellness, reduce stress and aid the healing process.

One patient told Village Voice News that he felt genuinely happy about the experience, describing the music as comforting and uplifting, particularly during a time when many patients are unable to spend Christmas at home with loved ones.

The Guyana Police Force Band was warmly praised for its performance and for the meaningful role its members play in spreading cheer to those spending the holiday season in hospital. The annual initiative continues to provide patients with an opportunity to experience the joy of Christmas while focusing on recovery.

Davis Memorial Hospital

Davis Memorial Hospital, a private Christian-missionary institution operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church and located in Durban Backlands, Georgetown, offers a wide range of medical services including emergency care, surgery, outpatient services, dental and laboratory care, along with a state-of-the-art dialysis centre. The hospital remains widely respected for its compassionate, patient-centred approach to healthcare.

Etched on the hospital’s steps are its guiding principles: Honesty, Encouragement, Patience, Compassion, Politeness, Thoughtfulness, Kindness, Cheerfulness, and Helpfulness — collectively described as its “Steps to Care.”

In a society where healthcare is a fundamental right and largely driven by the public sector, Davis Memorial Hospital’s continued contribution deserves recognition and support from the state, particularly given Guyana’s growing national wealth. Good health is essential to personal well-being and national development, and initiatives that nurture both physical and emotional wellness play a vital role in helping citizens heal and thrive.
