By Mark DaCosta- In a recent observation, Amanza Walton-Desir, the leader of the Forward Guyana Movement, has expressed her profound disappointment with President Irfaan Ali’s extended speech, in which he presented a grand developmental agenda for the nation. Walton-Desir’s critique centres on the President’s glaring silence concerning the pressing geopolitical realities that surround our nation, particularly the looming threats posed by regional tensions and national security challenges that demand immediate attention.

During his Wednesday two-and-a-half hour address, President Ali delineated an ambitious framework aimed at propelling the nation’s development. However, Walton-Desir contends that it was not the content of his vision that was striking, but rather the significant absence of crucial topics such as national security and current geopolitical shifts. “There was no acknowledgement of the geopolitical tensions unfolding around us,” she highlighted, urging that, in the face of adversities, our leadership ought to demonstrate an awareness of the real-world context in which these developmental plans must be executed.

As Venezuela continues to assert its claims on Guyanese territory and international relations become increasingly fraught, the absence of a detailed discussion on national security is concerning. The possibility of conflict between Venezuela and external forces, such as the United States, further complicates the landscape. As tensions mount, the assurance of a sound national security strategy becomes paramount. The Forward Guyana Movement leader stressed that any development plan requires a simultaneous emphasis on securing the environment in which it will be actualised. Without an understanding of potential disruptions, including risks that could arise from escalated regional conflicts, Walton-Desir argues that the government’s ambitions rest on shaky ground.

In her critique, she pointedly remarked that the government has a duty to ensure that its vision for the future is not merely aspirational but anchored in a realistic understanding of potential risks. Relying solely on vague references to “risk and resilience” without substantiating those terms with concrete strategies reveals a leadership gap. “Leadership is not measured by the inclusion of buzzwords…it is measured by whether those words are anchored to reality,” Walton-Desir stated emphatically, reflecting the sentiments of many Guyanese who seek more from their leaders in these turbulent times.

The lack of clarity regarding how the government plans to navigate the complexities of our current geopolitical environment is alarming. In a nation where citizens are grappling with daily uncertainties, the refusal to openly discuss the ramifications of rising tensions not only undermines public confidence but also illustrates a fundamental failure in governance. “To speak for two and a half hours about the future while saying nothing about the risks that could unravel it is a serious blind spot,” Walton-Desir warned, encapsulating the frustrations felt by many who demand more transparency and preparedness from those in power.

Amanza Walton-Desir’s call for transparency echoes the aspirations of countless Guyanese who yearn for a coherent and robust strategy to address potential crises, especially with threats from Venezuela looming. The leadership must engage in open dialogues, showcasing a clear national security strategy that partners economic ambitions with realities. It is this prudent approach that will ensure our nation not only survives but thrives amid the uncertainties of a shifting geopolitical landscape.
