By Mark DaCosta- In a troubling incident that unfolded in Sophia, a civilian was shot in the foot during an arrest operation conducted by the Guyana Police Force. The circumstances surrounding the event have ignited discussions about police tactics and the escalating violence faced by law enforcement.

On Friday, 12 December 2025, at approximately 17:00hrs, police responded to a larceny report in the area of Red Road, ‘D’ Field. Upon arrival, officers apprehended a 35-year-old man from the Cummings Lodge Squatting Area, who initially complied with their orders. However, the situation rapidly deteriorated when the suspect allegedly became belligerent. Reports indicate that he assaulted one of the officers and attempted to flee, prompting an armed response.

In a confrontation that escalated dangerously, the suspect reportedly picked up a glass bottle and threatened the police. According to the official police release, attempts to calm the situation were made but proved ineffective, leading an officer to discharge his weapon. As a result, the suspect sustained a gunshot wound to his left foot. Following the incident, he was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was treated and declared to be in stable condition.

This recent altercation comes against a backdrop of increasing gun-related crimes in our country. Statistics indicate a troubling rise in violent incidents, sparking fears among citizens about safety and the effectiveness of our law enforcement agencies. With the current government under the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) facing criticism over its handling of public security, this event adds fuel to the fire of dissent. Many citizens are left wondering whether adequate training and resources are being provided to our police officers, who are often forced to navigate volatile situations with split-second decision-making.

The PPP’s track record on crime and safety has been a contentious issue, as they struggle to implement effective strategies that truly address the root causes of violence and lawlessness. The incident in Sophia serves as an illustration of the strain that both civilians and police face in an environment marked by fear and tension. While it is crucial for officers to protect themselves and the public, the methods employed during such confrontations require scrutiny, particularly to avoid compromising the safety of civilians.

Despite assurances from the government that they are committed to enhancing the capabilities of our policing services, citizens are increasingly doubtful amid reports of such incidents. With every violent encounter, the relationship between the police and the communities they serve is further strained, leading to mistrust and an atmosphere of fear.

As investigations into the shooting continue, there are calls for greater transparency from the Guyana Police Force and the government’s accountability regarding crime prevention strategies. The public deserves a thorough examination of not only this incident but also the broader issues of police engagement with communities and how such situations can be de-escalated more effectively in the future.

In a nation that treasures peace and unity, it is imperative that we seek a path forward that ensures the safety of both our civilians and law enforcement officers. The events of December 12 serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for reform, training, and dialogue in order to tackle the deep-seated issues pertaining to crime and safety in our society.
