By Mark DaCosta- In a brazen act, alleged smugglers overpowered officers from the Law Enforcement and Investigation Division (LEID) of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) on the morning of November 13, 2025, during an enforcement operation in Berbice. The incident underscores ongoing issues related to smuggling in our nation and raises questions about the adequacy of law enforcement measures.

At approximately 4 am, in the vicinity of No. 61 Village, the LEID officers were carrying out an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the seizure of a large wooden vessel loaded with uncustomed goods, principally alcoholic beverages. This interception, while a crucial step in curtailing smuggling activities, soon devolved into chaos. As the officers began escorting the confiscated vessel to a secure facility near No. 43 Village, a group of men launched a well-coordinated ambush.

In their attempt to reclaim the seized goods, the attackers violently confronted the officers and forcibly took back possession of the vessel along with its illicit cargo. Thankfully, through effective collaboration with the Guyana Police Force and the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit, authorities managed to apprehend four individuals believed to be involved in the attack. These suspects are now set to face legal action for their brazen conduct, as GRA officials confirmed their commitment to prosecuting those who endeavour to undermine the country’s revenue system.

“The perpetrators have since been arrested and will face prosecution to the full extent of the law for their actions,” a GRA representative stated, reiterating the agency’s determination to combat smuggling. The GRA further urged citizens to report any unlawful activities, promising confidentiality and potential rewards for those who assist in the fight against smuggling.

Despite the arrests, the incident has prompted concern over the effectiveness of law enforcement in tackling the smuggling epidemic that has plagued our nation. Critics argue that the repeated occurrences of such attacks indicate a troubling trend of insecurity and ineptitude in policing illicit activities. The ongoing presence of smuggling operations points to a significant gap in enforcement capabilities, suggesting that reforms may be necessary to bolster the resources and authority of agencies like the GRA.

The GRA has long maintained a “zero tolerance” approach to smuggling, and their plea for public assistance highlights the critical role citizens play in addressing this issue. They reminded the public that smuggling not only deprives the government of necessary revenue but also poses broader risks to safety and community well-being.

The frequency and audacity of such attacks speak volumes about the challenges faced by law enforcement in our country. While the recent arrests are a step in the right direction, the incident raises questions about the overall strategy employed by the current administration to combat smuggling effectively. The broader implications of this incident may lead citizens to reflect on governance, law enforcement priorities, and the need for a more robust framework to protect our economy.

While the GRA continues its efforts to locate the vessel and its contents, the episode serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement in their fight against smuggling.
