Chelsea Edghill wins thriller to advance to Womens singles quarter finals
Chelsea Edghill OLY advanced to the Womens singles quarter finals in spectacular fashion as she won a hard fought seven game thriller against Ugandan Judith Parvin Nangonzi. The Ugandan player won the first two games 11 – 8, 11 – 9 but Chelsea bounced back to win the third game 11 – 9 and then the fourth game in identical fashion 11 – 9. Chelsea won the crucial fifth game 14 – 12 but then lost the sixth game 11 – 9. She however prevailed in the seventh game 11 – 8 to advance to the quarter finals where she will meet Sibel Altinkaya from Turkey at 10:30 am Guyana time.
Both Shemar Britton and Elishaba Johnson lost in their quest to advance to the round of 16 in the mens singles. Shemar lost to Alkhadrawi Ali Saudi Arabia 11 – 6, 11 – 6, 11 – 6, 11 – 5 while Elishaba lost to Hodaei Seyedamirhossein Iran 11 -2, 11 – 5, 11 – 7, 11 – 4.
The doubles starts tomorrow with Shemar Britton/Chelsea Edghill matched up against ahmed Md Javed/Kho Khoy Sai Marma Bangladesh in the mixed doubles, Shemar Britton/Nigel Bryan against Joseph Francis Sebatindira/Joshua Magaya Uganda in the mens doubles and Chelsea Edghill/Jasmine Billingy against SafaeiShima/Neda Shahsavari Iran in the womens doubles.
Swimming
Delroy Tyrrell ended his first international competition for Guyana placing seventh in semi final No 1 of the 50m backstroke with a time of 28.06. This was a creditable performance from an athlete who was representing his country for the first time at a major competition.
