The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has taken note of information circulating on social media regarding a 5-year-old child involved in a sexual assault matter in Region Nine.

The Ministry strongly condemns the sharing of such sensitive information and reminds the public that doing so is irresponsible, unethical, and causes further harm and distress to the child.

Children who are victims of abuse must be protected, not exposed.

On receiving the report from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on October 9, 2025, the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) immediately intervened and has been providing continuous support, including psychosocial support and trauma-focused counselling, to the child and family.

There has been sustained contact and monitoring, ensuring the child’s safety and well-being at all times.

When the child was medically cleared to speak, a Forensic Interview was conducted at the Child Advocacy Centre on October 13, 2025, in accordance with all established Child Protection Protocols. The case now remains under active investigation by the Police.

The Ministry once again urges members of the public to refrain from sharing or reposting sensitive information involving children, especially victims of sexual assault. Such actions are a serious violation of their privacy and dignity and can significantly impact their recovery.

Section 10(2) of the Childcare and Protection Agency Act (Cap. 46:07) expressly prohibits the publication of any information related to a child involved in legal proceedings if such publication could lead to the identification of that child. This includes details such as the child’s name, age, address, school, or any other particulars that may reveal their identity.

This provision intends to safeguard the privacy, dignity, and well-being of the child by preventing exposure that could cause harm, distress, or stigmatisation.

The Ministry remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting every child in Guyana and will continue to take swift action in all matters of child abuse and exploitation.
