By Mark DaCosta- Azruddin Mohamed, the incoming Leader of the Opposition, has strongly condemned what he describes as a systematic campaign of character assassination targeting him and his family. In a passionate address to the nation, Mohamed alleges that the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is deploying fear tactics to undermine his political movement, which he claims has rapidly shifted the political landscape of our nation in the brief span of three months.

Emerging from recent elections, which he contends do not reflect the true strength of his party, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), Mohamed’s entry into Parliament is symbolic of a growing momentum for change among Guyanese citizens. Despite the PPP’s claims that WIN has secured 16 seats, Mohamed argues that this figure fails to represent the overwhelming support he has observed on the ground. He insists that the ruling party feels threatened by the potential for opposition in the upcoming 2030 elections, evidenced by their hesitance to convene the new parliamentary session and officially acknowledge the opposition.

In his statement, Mohamed did not shy away from discussing the alleged misuse of public funds, asserting that a significant sum of US$300,000 was diverted to hire a lobbying firm in the United States. He accuses this firm of being a tool for political persecution, specifically aiming to discredit him and his family. “Now you know the purpose of the nearly GY$63 million wasted on a lobby firm – political persecution – and that money could have been used to uplift the people,” he stated, underlining what he sees as the discrepancy between government spending priorities and the needs of ordinary citizens.

The incoming Opposition Leader further articulated that these relentless attacks are designed not only to weaken him personally but to deter the growing call for change resonating across the country. He emphasized, “Fearing the momentum seen at the last election and the cry of the Guyanese people for change, they are doing everything possible to stop me.” Mohamed firmly rejected the notion that he would retreat in the face of adversity, reaffirming his dedication to serving the people. His commitment echoes a deep-seated resolve: “I will not be silenced. When the wicked came to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.”

The political climate in our country is charged, with discontent brewing among the populace over perceived mismanagement and corruption. Mohamed contends that the PPP, despite holding a majority in Parliament, is actively stalling to recognise the democratic mandate of the opposition. This raised questions about transparency and the intentions of the current government, particularly as Guyanese citizens are increasingly disillusioned with the established order.

The leadership of WIN, according to Mohamed, embodies a new era of representation, one that prioritises the needs of citizens over entrenched political agendas. He stated, “I, Azruddin Mohamed, leader of We Invest in Nationhood and Leader of the Opposition (Elect), reaffirm my commitment to you, the Guyanese people.” His resolve, he emphasises, is rooted in a love for the country and the conviction to serve, reinforcing a narrative of resilience.

Supporters of Mohamed are rallying behind his call for political accountability, hopeful that their champion’s ascent within the parliamentary ranks heralds a shift away from the status quo. The youth and grassroot movements, invigorated by the potential for change and a government responsive to their needs, view his leadership as a beacon of hope. They are eager to see not just representation in Parliament but substantive policies that address their concerns directly, rather than the political manoeuvres that have characterised recent electoral cycles.

As the situation continues to unfold, eyes will be on both the PPP and WIN. Will the current government acknowledge the legitimacy of the opposition and engage in meaningful dialogue, or will they persist in their defensive posture? The stakes have never been higher, and the people of our nation are keenly aware of the urgent need for transformation in how they are governed. Azruddin Mohamed’s determination serves as a reminder that the voice of the populace must resonate within the halls of power, shaping a future where accountability and service to the people take precedence over political expediency.

In a political environment rife with tension, Azruddin Mohamed is poised to become a formidable challenger, and the coming months will undoubtedly test the resilience of both the incoming opposition and the ruling government as our nation navigates its path toward 2030.
