By Mark DaCosta- In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded in the early hours of September 30, 2025, a pedestrian lost his life in a collision involving a police officer’s vehicle on the Mon Repos Public Road. This tragic event brings to light not only the dangers of our roads but also raises questions about accountability and safety oversight within our law enforcement agencies.

It was just moments past midnight when the accident occurred, involving a white motor car, registration PAC 9262, driven by a 26-year-old Police Lance Corporal from the Ogle Police Outpost. Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle was travelling westward when the pedestrian, identified only as Soath, suddenly darted across the road, leading to the unfortunate clash that resulted in his severe injuries. Despite the swift response of emergency services, who transported him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, highlighting the grim reality of road safety in our nation.

Authorities report that the police officer underwent a breathalyser test, which indicated no presence of alcohol, suggesting that impairment was not a factor in this tragic occurrence. Nevertheless, the officer has been placed under close arrest, pending thorough investigations by the authorities. This measure points to an acknowledgment of the serious implications of the incident and a commitment to transparency in how it will be managed.

Road accidents are an ever-present threat on our streets, influenced by a variety of factors, including inadequate infrastructure, reckless driving behaviours, and a lack of rigorous enforcement of traffic laws. In recent years, as the economy has grown, the volume of vehicular traffic has surged, yet the government has seemingly failed to adapt our roads and safety measures accordingly. With incidents like the one at Mon Repos, it becomes increasingly clear that improving road safety must become a priority for our leaders.

Concerns surrounding police conduct in traffic-related incidents are not new. There exists a rising perception among the public that law enforcement may be too lenient when it comes to their own members involved in such cases. This particular accident sheds light on the need for stricter accountability measures for police officers, especially in situations where fatalities occur. The public expects that no one is above the law, not even those sworn to uphold it.

As investigations continue, our community demands answers and justice for Soath and his loved ones. There is an urgent call for the government to place more emphasis on road safety initiatives and effective traffic regulation. The tragic loss of life on our roadways cannot be overlooked, and the authorities must take actionable steps toward preventing such occurrences in the future.

This incident at Mon Repos serves as a reminder that road safety is a collective responsibility, one that extends beyond mere compliance with regulations. It urges us all, particularly our leaders, to implement lasting change that prioritises the lives of every citizen. We can no longer stand idly by as road accidents continue to take innocent lives. Now is the time for decisive action to ensure that such tragedies become a relic of the past.
