$5M Missing from GECOM, One Held as Probe Widens

By Mark DaCosta- An ongoing investigation has been launched by the Guyana Police Force following the disappearance of $5 million from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). The police have detained at least one individual and are scrutinising several employees connected to the alleged theft, raising concerns over the financial integrity of GECOM shortly after the recent elections.

The alarming incident has drawn public attention and scrutiny, particularly given the sensitive context in which it has unfolded. With the nation still regrouping from the September 1 General and Regional Elections, the allegations of larceny involving such a significant sum of public funds cast a shadow over the electoral process. Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed the police’s active investigation, noting that multiple employees are currently “assisting” with inquiries regarding the missing amount.

The sequence of events began when discrepancies were detected within the Accounts Department of GECOM, prompting officials to initiate an internal review. Over the weekend, it was discovered that the entire $5 million allocation intended for polling day staff had gone missing. Responding swiftly, police investigators were called in, and several GECOM employees were brought in for questioning. Among those questioned was an Assistant Accounts Clerk, who has apparently been found in possession of some of the missing cash. He remains in custody while authorities continue their investigations.

This scandal aligns with claims made by the newly established We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, which has alleged that GECOM may be facing larger financial mismanagement issues. WIN has pointed out discrepancies that suggest more than $50 million could be unaccounted for. However, police have thus far confirmed only the loss of $5 million.

While GECOM’s Public Relations Officer, Yolanda Ward, has downplayed the matter, stating that an internal investigation is underway, the commission’s reluctance to disclose specific details only raises further questions. Notably, payments to temporary staff hired for the elections have been affected by this unfolding story. Many have reported being unable to receive their due compensation, which was originally scheduled for distribution. GECOM needs to address the situation effectively to restore trust among its workforce.

As the police inquiry unfolds, employees of the finance department have been taken in for police interviews, and many were released on bail after questioning. Our nation deserves transparency in such crucial matters, especially when it involves public funds meant for electoral processes, a cornerstone of our democracy.

The fact that this incident came to light so soon after the contentious elections adds to the speculation regarding the management and oversight within GECOM. Observers are left questioning whether this is an isolated incident or indicative of a deeper malaise within the commission’s operations. More arrests could be on the horizon, as police continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the missing funds.

With the commission’s credibility already being tested, it is essential that GECOM acts decisively to address these allegations. The people of our nation expect accountability and integrity from the institutions that serve them, especially those tasked with upholding the democratic process. As this egregious situation continues to develop, the imperative for GECOM to provide clarity and assurance to the public has never been more pressing. The ongoing investigation will not only determine the fate of those involved but could also have wider implications for how electoral funds are managed and safeguarded in our country in the future.
