By Mark DaCosta-The alleged oppressive tactics employed by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government against incoming Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed underscore a disturbing trend of political victimisation in our country. Recent developments illustrate a worrying pattern where state power is allegedly being misused to undermine dissent and intimidate political opponents, raising serious questions about the erosion of property rights and due process.

Azruddin Mohamed, from the Mohamed family, has become the target of what he describes as “the most blatant form of political victimisation.” This troubling situation has its roots in the actions taken by the PPP during the recent election campaign. It began when a large billboard promoting presidential candidate Irfaan Ali was erected without consent on Mohamed’s property, a clear violation of his rights. Many see this act as just the beginning of hostilities directed at those who oppose the ruling government.

In the aftermath of the election results, which saw the PPP triumph, the situation escalated dramatically. A government contractor, Romain Bhagwandin, reportedly moved heavy machinery onto Mohamed’s land. This action was executed without any formal lease or legal authorisation, raising alarm over the sanctity of private property rights in our nation. To further complicate matters, Bhagwandin is alleged to be using Mohamed’s property for commercial activities, operating an enterprise valued at hundreds of millions of dollars while essentially squatting on land that is unequivocally owned by the Mohamed family.

When confronted about the illegal occupation, Bhagwandin claimed that he had the backing of Deodat Indar, the Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, as well as the Village Council, which he allegedly stated approved of his occupation. This statement reflects a troubling premise: that government officials can grant rights to individuals over private property without any legal basis. Mohamed asserts that neither the minister nor the village council holds jurisdiction over his land, rejecting Bhagwandin’s claims as devoid of legal merit.

The core of this predicament lies in the government’s apparent disregard for legal processes and property rights, pushing the question of whether the Mohameds should bear the financial burden of hiring legal counsel to reclaim their land. This situation raises broader implications about the rule of law and the protection of individual rights in our nation, as it suggests a willingness on the part of the government to protect its allies while trampling upon the rights of its critics.

The actions of the PPP government in this case serve as a striking reminder of the lengths to which those in power may go to silence dissent. The ongoing campaign of intimidation against Azruddin Mohamed and his family appears to align with a broader strategy to consolidate control and stifle opposition voices. Mohamed and his supporters are calling for an immediate cessation of these aggressive tactics, urging the government to respect property rights and uphold the principles of law and integrity that should govern all operations within our society.

The plight of the Mohameds is not merely a personal issue; it resonates deeply with many in our nation who are concerned about the overarching impact of governmental overreach. As the political climate continues to evolve, the situation serves as a crucial reminder that the political landscape in our country requires vigilance and engagement from all stakeholders to ensure that justice and fairness prevail.

In light of these allegations, it is essential for the people of our nation and the international community to remain aware and vigilant regarding the governmental conduct and its implications for democracy and civil rights. The conflict surrounding Azruddin Mohamed and the PPP government illustrates a critical moment in our nation’s ongoing struggle for political integrity and fairness.
