By Mark DaCosta-The recent acid attack on two women in Georgetown has brought to light the alarming rise in random acts of violence in our nation, raising concerns about safety and security in public spaces. Such incidents not only harm the immediate victims but also instil a profound sense of fear amongst the populace, making ordinary activities like going out for lunch a source of anxiety.
On September 3rd, 2025, an unsettling incident occurred on East Street when a man in a car threw a glass bottle containing a corrosive substance at two unsuspecting women as they sought a meal. This brazen act of aggression highlights a disturbing trend within our society, where individuals are subjected to violence for no apparent reason.
The Guyana Police Force is currently seeking assistance from the public to identify the perpetrator, whose actions have left the victims in a state of distress and the wider community shaken. In a statement, authorities urged anyone with information regarding the suspect to come forward, assuring that all tips would remain confidential.
The rise in unprovoked violence can inflict lasting harm on the victim’s psyche, forcing people to reconsider their daily routines and instilling fear in communities that should be safe. One of the witnesses of this incident, speaking confidentially, mentioned, “We live in fear of random violence, it could happen to anyone.” This sentiment resonates deeply with many citizens who now feel intimidated by the possibility of encountering dangerous individuals in everyday scenarios.
In our country, instances of violent crime are not new; however, the unpredictable nature of these attacks poses new challenges for law enforcement and the community alike. Many citizens are calling for increased security measures and a more visible police presence in urban areas, as the sense of vulnerability continues to infect the public consciousness. The failure of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administration to adequately address these pressing issues only exacerbates feelings of insecurity. As communities turn towards the government for solutions, the lack of effective response only heightens frustrations.
Additionally, community leaders have voiced concerns regarding the implications of repeated violent outbreaks. They fear that if these patterns continue unchecked, they may create a society where fear reigns, discouraging people from engaging in normal social interactions. The situation appears dire, with a growing apprehension that even stepping outside could potentially lead to becoming a victim of indiscriminate violence. “It feels like we are ducking danger at every turn,” a local business owner lamented.
What compounds this dangerous atmosphere is the perceived inaction on the part of the authorities. Many citizens believe that under the current leadership, crime has been allowed to flourish, making individuals feel increasingly exposed and unprotected. This perception of neglect has led to calls for a re-evaluation of public safety strategies. The populace demands more than just reassurances; they seek tangible actions to restore their sense of safety.
With continuing attacks and the public’s rising unease, it is critical for the government to consider effective strategies for combating violence and ensuring community safety. Educating the public about reporting suspicious activities and launching awareness initiatives could be steps in the right direction. Moreover, fostering collaborative efforts between the police and the community may not only aid in preventing such incidents but also work towards restoring trust between citizens and law enforcement agencies.
As we stand united against these acts of senseless violence, it becomes evident that without swift and decisive governmental action, our nation risks becoming a place where fear overshadows the freedom to live without apprehension. Now more than ever, we must rally together, voice our concerns, and demand the change necessary to reclaim our streets and ensure our safety.
