Indigenous Artistes Turned Away After Association with Opposition Figure

By Mark DaCosta- In a troubling incident that calls into question the fundamental respect for Indigenous communities, the Surama Cultural Group experienced unwarranted discrimination following their engagement with Azruddin Mohamed, the leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) movement. After the group was generously provided a musical keyboard by Mr. Mohamed, they undertook a grueling 12-hour journey to perform at the Sophia Exhibition Centre, only to face a humiliating rejection upon arrival. This shameful act represents not just a personal affront to the group but a broader social injustice that underscores a systemic issue in our political landscape.

The Surama Cultural Group, which predominantly comprises Makushi and other Indigenous individuals, had prepared meticulously for their scheduled performance, an opportunity to share and celebrate their rich cultural heritage. However, their aspirations were dashed when they were abruptly informed to vacate the venue. Such treatment is emblematic of a worrying trend where individuals and groups associated with opposition parties, particularly WIN, are systematically targeted for their affiliations. This incident goes beyond a mere miscommunication; it reveals the deep-rooted biases within the current political establishment, which appears to put party loyalty above human dignity.

The involvement of Mr. Mohamed, who has actively supported Indigenous aspirations, only exacerbates the indignity faced by the Surama Cultural Group. Their experience of being turned away is not simply an isolated case but indicative of a broader pattern of harassment directed at dissenters and those who reach out for assistance from alternative political entities. The treatment of these culturally rich individuals during Indigenous Heritage Month — a time meant for recognition and celebration — speaks volumes about the state of respect afforded to Indigenous Peoples within our nation’s socio-political framework.

To undermine the artistic expression of the Surama Cultural Group and ignore the perseverance they embody is not just an affront to their cultural identity, but a direct assault on the rights of all marginalised communities. Every citizen deserves to feel valued, respected, and supported, regardless of their political affiliations. The disheartening actions of those in power serve to reinforce the notion that voices willing to oppose the status quo are met with hostility rather than encouragement.

As one analyst  puts it, as citizens of our country, we must collectively condemn this egregious treatment of Indigenous Peoples, who, for far too long, have faced systemic discrimination and erasure. The response from those in authority towards the Surama Cultural Group is an insult to their sacrifices and to the very essence of our nation’s cultural mosaic. It leaves one to ponder whether the ruling elite truly honours the principles of inclusion and diversity or merely pays lip service to these ideals while targeting those with whom they disagree.

Our Indigenous brothers and sisters have the right to celebrate their culture and heritage without the looming threat of political retribution. The blatant snubbing of their efforts by officials from the ruling party is not only shameful but showcases an alarming level of intolerance within our government. As we commemorate Indigenous Heritage Month, let us not forget the obligation of every citizen to stand against such acts of discrimination, elevate the voices of the oppressed, and demand accountability from those in power.

In this hour of adversity, the Surama Cultural Group’s strength and resilience can serve as a rallying point for all citizens to champion a cause rooted in dignity and respect for all communities in our nation. The time has come to challenge the status quo and ensure that every voice — regardless of its political alignment — is not merely heard but celebrated. We must all work together to dismantle the structures of oppression that allow such victimisation to flourish.
