By Mark DaCosta- The Alliance for Change (AFC) says it is paving a path for a transformative future in our nation by proposing a comprehensive governance reform agenda aimed at enhancing democratic practices, ensuring equity, and safeguarding the rights of all citizens. As the country continues to grapple with issues pertinent to its political landscape, the AFC’s manifesto outlines critical changes that could reshape the very fabric of governance, mitigating the concentration of power in the executive branch and fostering greater involvement from all sectors of society, especially our diaspora.

In a climate marked by political turbulence and concerns over governance, the AFC manifesto sets forth a vision for the next decade aimed at addressing longstanding deficiencies within our nation’s political structure. Key elements of this vision include a call for limiting the authority of the executive presidency, reinforcing parliamentary checks, and enhancing the accountability of cabinet officials. These changes are designed to dismantle the monopolistic hold that has long undermined democracy in our country, the AFC said.

The manifesto highlights the crucial importance of involving the Guyanese diaspora in national decision-making processes. By ensuring these citizens are included, the AFC acknowledges the wealth of experience and insight they bring, thereby enriching the dialogue about our nation’s future. This inclusive approach extends to the proposal for mechanisms that promote ethnic security and fair representation, fostering a governance model that genuinely reflects the diversity of our population.

Moreover, the AFC says that you it prioritises the independence of the judiciary, seeking reforms to the appointment processes for senior judicial officers. By advocating for merit-based appointments, the AFC aims to bolster public trust in the judicial system, which is essential for upholding justice and maintaining the rule of law. The strengthening of Rights Commissions is another pillar of their proposal, aimed at safeguarding the civil liberties of all individuals, ensuring every Guyanese feels protected under the law.

One of the most ambitious proposals in the AFC’s manifesto is the pledge to guarantee equitable benefits from our nation’s resources enshrined in the Constitution. This fundamental commitment aims to rectify the disparities in wealth distribution that have historically favoured a select few while leaving many in dire poverty. It signifies an understanding that our nation’s natural wealth ought to serve the interests of all citizens, not merely those in positions of power or influence.

Furthermore, the organisation emphasises the urgent need for electoral reform, advocating for improvements to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and the electoral system at large. Their determination to achieve free, fair, and credible elections arrives at a crucial time when confidence in the electoral process has been deeply eroded under the current People’s Progressive Party administration. The AFC’s vision is clear: a democratic framework that allows citizens to genuinely participate in governance without fear of manipulation or bias.

Drawing attention to these critical reforms, the AFC manifesto challenges the status quo and seeks to empower the populace in ways that have been systematically overlooked. The call for increased accountability, transparency, and equitable governance highlights the stark contrast between their vision for our nation and the entrenched practices so often associated with the current ruling party. As Guyanese citizens assess the implications of these proposals, the AFC aims to inspire a renewed sense of hope for a brighter, more equitable future.
