Her Excellency Jane Miller OBE, British High Commissioner to Guyana, delivered compelling remarks ahead of the International Business Conference Guyana 2025, highlighting the United Kingdom’s commitment towards sustainable business partnerships across the Caribbean and South American region.

H.E. Jane Miller emphasised the importance of viewing the region as a unified market rather than isolated economies. “The trick is to see this as a regional market,” High Commissioner Miller stated. “When businesses look at countries like Suriname or individual Caribbean nations as small markets, they miss the incredible opportunities that emerge when considering the region collectively.”

H.E. Jane Miller highlighted the UK’s reputation for building enduring business relationships, distinguishing British investment from short-term ventures. “This is one of the things that the UK prides ourselves in – when we come to a market, you know that we’re going to develop a long-term relationship. We are not one of those countries that comes in, does something, and flies out again.”

The High Commissioner noted that Guyana represents the UK’s leading trading partner in the Caribbean region, demonstrating the strength and potential of bilateral economic ties.

The High Commissioner outlined multiple sectors where UK expertise aligns with regional priorities. In digital innovation, the UK is positioned as a global leader in digital solutions, with massive opportunities across various sectors. In agriculture, the country offers comprehensive support ranging from mechanization to research, including pesticides and agricultural inputs. Aquaculture was highlighted through recent engagement with Aberdeen-based global experts, pointing to specialised opportunities in the field. In infrastructure, advanced companies are delivering innovative solutions that go beyond traditional road building. Finally, in professional services, the UK brings strengths in accounting, business support services, and architecture.

“My big message to businesses is to come explore the market,” Miller urged. “It’s interesting when we do trade missions – we see people come in uncertain, but by the end, their eyes have opened to the massive opportunities available.”

The High Commissioner emphasised that understanding regional opportunities requires direct engagement: “People can’t understand the opportunities until they come here, and as High Commissioner, I’m here to support businesses as they come to market and help them navigate the business environment.”

H.E. Jane Miller concluded by reinforcing the critical importance of relationship-building in regional business success. “My experience in the region is that businesses do best when they develop relationships, and that’s exactly what the International Business Conference facilitates – networking and matching people to drive progress.”

The International Business Conference Guyana 2025 continues to serve as a premier platform for fostering these essential business relationships and exploring the region’s vast economic potential.
