The Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA) has welcomed the United States Government’s decision to slash reciprocal tariffs on Guyanese exports, calling the move a much-needed win for the local manufacturing sector.
In a statement released on Friday, August 1, the Association confirmed that recent Executive Orders issued by the U.S. Government will see tariff rates on Guyanese goods reduced from a steep 38 percent to 15 percent. The GMSA said the tariff cut will ease pressure on local exporters and open doors for wider access to the U.S. market.
“This is a positive and encouraging development for Guyana’s business community,” the GMSA stated. “The reduction in tariffs strengthens the competitive position of Guyanese goods and services abroad.”
The Association extended its appreciation to the Government of Guyana, crediting the administration’s diplomatic efforts for helping to secure the breakthrough. It said the government’s active engagement throughout the negotiation process reflects a strong commitment to promoting local industry and advancing Guyana’s trade interests.
The GMSA also noted that discussions are still ongoing and expressed its full support for continued dialogue aimed at further easing trade barriers. It reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside government and international partners to advocate for policies that create more opportunities for local manufacturers and service providers.
“The GMSA will continue to support and represent the interests of Guyanese businesses as we work to expand our export footprint and build a stronger, more resilient economy,” the statement said.
With this development, manufacturers are hopeful that the tariff relief will translate into tangible benefits such as increased production, higher export volumes, and greater job creation across the sector.
