Emancipation Day Message 2025

Roysdale Forde, S.C.

 Fellow Citizens of Guyana,

On this hallowed occasion of Emancipation Day 2025, in solemn reverence we honour the indomitable spirit of our African ancestors. Forged in the crucible of colonial oppression, their unyielding resolve shattered the chains of enslavement, igniting a beacon of hope for dignity, liberty, and justice. Their triumph over unimaginable adversity remains the bedrock of our nation’s pursuit of true equality.

As we commemorate this historic milestone, we must confront a sobering and worrying reality. Despite the promise of emancipation and the unprecedented wealth flowing from our abundant oil and natural resources, far too many Guyanese, particularly those from marginalised and minority communities, remain ensnared in the shadows of economic exclusion and social inequity.

The legacy of emancipation is not merely the abolition of physical shackles but a clarion call for systemic equity, fairness, and human dignity. Still, nearly two centuries later, vast segments of our society languish in poverty while a privileged minority reaps disproportionate benefits from our nation’s bounty.

This disparity is not merely an economic shortfall; it is a profound moral failing. True emancipation remains elusive when our youth are denied pathways to opportunity, our elders are relegated to the margins, and entire communities are excluded from shaping the decisions that define their futures. The wealth of our land must serve as a catalyst for collective upliftment, not a tool for entrenching division.

As we stand on the cusp of a pivotal General and Regional Election fixed for September, we are presented with a defining choice: to perpetuate the inequities of the past or to forge a bold, inclusive future. I call upon all Guyanese to embrace a vision of shared prosperity, where every citizen, irrespective of race, region, or creed, is empowered to thrive and prosper. This is the Guyana our ancestors envisioned, a nation where the fruits of progress are equitably distributed, and the principles of justice, fairness and unity are not mere rhetoric but lived realities.

My commitment is to a Guyana that honours the sacrifices of our forebears through transformative action. We must enact policies that dismantle barriers to opportunity, ensure transparent governance, and prioritise the needs of the underserved. Let this Emancipation Day mark a turning point; a renewed covenant to complete the journey toward true freedom that our ancestors began. Under an APNU government we will build a nation where every voice is heard, every potential is nurtured, and every community is included in the promise of prosperity.

On this sacred day, let us rededicate ourselves to the ideals of emancipation: liberty, equity, and solidarity. May these principles shine a bright light on our path forward as we strive, together, to create a Guyana worthy of our ancestors’ sacrifices and our children’s dreams.

Happy Emancipation Day, Guyana. May freedom, justice, and unity illuminate our collective journey.
