At just 23 years old, Katieanne Porte, a university student, is balancing the demands of academia and entrepreneurship with a grace and grit that’s both inspiring and impressive.

A final-year student at the University of Guyana, Katieanne is reading for her  Bachelor of Science degree in Exploration Geology. Katieanne is also the proud owner of Kate’s Treats Bakery, a small business built on passion, purpose, and pastries.

Her venture, known for its warm slogan “Made With Love,” is more than a business, but rather it’s a reflection of Katieanne’s values.

“I truly believe in leading with care and kindness, and I hope that translates in everything I do,” she told this publication.

A Sweet Start Rooted in Family and Passion

Katieanne’s journey into baking was shaped by the dual influence of family and a craving for independence. Her mother, a skilled pastry chef, served as the ultimate role model. “It felt like a natural progression for me,” she explains. But her love of sweet treats and creative expression also played an equally vital role.

What began with custom-decorated cookies quickly expanded into cakes and other dessert art. “I’ve always been a creative person, so baking feels like creating art with desserts,” Katieanne says.

Although naturally introverted, her family and friends encouraged her to share her talent with the world,  and she hasn’t looked back since.

Juggling Studies, and a Business:

For Katieanne, running a business while navigating university life hasn’t been without its hurdles.

She added:  “Time management is probably my biggest challenge. I started this in my final year, which was probably the hardest time to take on something new.”

As a one-woman operation, Katieanne wears all the hats; baker, designer, admin, marketer, and even dishwasher. “It’s been overwhelming, but I’m slowly building a system that works better each day,” she stated.

Customer service has also pushed her outside her comfort zone.

As an introvert, constant communication can be draining, but Porte prides herself on staying kind and respectful while upholding her business policies and boundaries. That commitment to kindness has become part of what makes her brand so beloved.

Words of Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs:

For young dreamers and aspiring entrepreneurs, looking to start their own ventures, Katieanne offers heartfelt advice:

“Your only competition is you. Aim to be 1% better every day.”

She encourages budding entrepreneurs to avoid the trap of comparison, but rather to focus on their own growth, and prepare for ups and downs.

“Sales will fluctuate, but that doesn’t mean you give up,” she says. “Have a plan, use your downtime wisely, and remember the power of community. Sometimes, only another baker will truly understand your struggles,” she said.

Katieanne’s story is proof that passion and perseverance can coexist and even flourish, in the face of various challenges.
